May 12, 2024: It is hard to understand how time drifts bye and the old is replaced by the new. We want to thank all the efforts that are made every single day to protect, defend and help all the animals we take for granted! Remembering and honoring all the help and volunteers that make this possible.
Below are the photos of our newest Maximo family member "Link" adopted by Sir Scruffy's "human" brother and his family Mary and Willa. Link is a Border Collie puppy rescued from an adoption group in Melbourne, Florida. We welcome him and his energy and puppy personality that brings smiles to cherish each and every day...Welcome Link!
August 14, 2019 - Below photos welcome "Ziggy" proudly welcomed to New Hope's longtime cornerstone store "Love Saves the Day" family. We join in morning the loss of Jackson, the sweetest beloved dog and family member of David, Mary and Willa this past week. Jackson was a constant reminder of the healing power of the calming effect of his presence. May he rest in peace and share in the rewards of the special place in heaven reserved for the pure hearts and soles of the many pets crossing over the "rainbow bridge" to eternal happiness.

January 2016: Clarisa Belle Maximo - Welcome Message to Sir Scruffy Maximo's family...
Scruffy's Dad with the Executive Director of the Bucks county SPCA along with Sir Scruffy's donation of 2015.
|
Clarisa Belle Maximo was added to the Maximo family from the Bucks County Quakertown location. She was rescued from a dangerous hoarding environment and quickly gained our hearts and confidence in her ability to bring a smile to our faces as well as the faces of everyone who comes in contact her. Sir Scruffy would be happy to consider her his sister in the Maximo family!
03JAN2016 - Photos at left show the presenting of Sir Scruffy's donation to the Bucks County SPCA. Linda Reider the Executive Director (replacing the recently retired Ann Irwin) was on hand to accept the donation of found money during the many walks Sir Scruffy enjoyed during his life as part of our family. Scruffy maintained his tradition to donate his "found money" every year to the Bucks County SPCA where he began his life journey as part of the Maximo family. Although we continue to mourn the loss of our dearest family member we plan on continuing the tradition with family, friends, and Scruffy's friends contribution to the Sir Scruffy found money jar pictured in Linda's hand. A warm welcome to Linda and graditude for all her efforts to continue the legacy and dedication offered by Ann Irwin during her long and successful career serving the SPCA and the needs of our furry friends.
Scruffy, we miss you every single day and thank you for the many fond memories - till we meet again! |
24July2014 - Edgar was just added to "Scruffy's Friends" page as a new friend. Although Edgar never got to meet Sir Scruffy he clearly represents a neighbor that Scruffy would have been a favorite friend. Edgar is fun, energetic, and friendly full of life and can steal your heart in a minute. His ability to charm you and melt into your heart would have attracted Sir Scruffy to him with the promise of his friendship and playfullness that made Scruffy our precious family member that will remain in our hearts forever. Scruffy's wishes are for Edgar to have a special happy and healthy life with his mom Marina who loves and takes care of him as an important addition to her people family including Edgar's sister Margaretta and brother Taylor who now share their mom with this "little ball of fur". Congradulations to Edgar and his new family!
Special remembrance to our most precious and loved family member Sir Scruffy who passed away in the morning of Saturday, April 18, 2015.
In the early morning hours of Saturday, April 18, 2015 Sir Scruffy fell asleep in the arms of his beloved family. Sir Scruffy was more than a family pet and he was able to share his love and personality with all those who had the previlige to meet him.
"Rainbow Bridge"
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again
caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks to Sir Scruffy's neighbor and friend Nicholas, we have captured a drawing showing Scruffy on one of his favorite activities...walking! Nicholas, his dog Casey and Sir Scruffy share a special bond in that they grew up together over the last decade. You can kind of call them "life long neighbors" sharing the neigborhood experiences and friends both two legged and furry 4 legged!
Sir Scruffy was surprised and impressed with the drawing presented to him last night on his walk - Thank you Nicholas...what a pleasant surprise!

Giuliana, Sir Scruffy's Number 1 fan and friend surprised Sir Scruffy today with the portrait below. This brought him a happy start to his day and smiles all day long too. Scruffy is amazed with Giuliana's talent as she captured his personality along with making him look great too!
Giuliana, Sir Scruffy and his family will cherish this portrait always - the first thing Sir Scruffy is going to do is to take it and get it framed to hang on his wall.
Thank you for all the effort and kindness and thinking of me! Have a great Summer!

19Jan2014 - Thank You CARES, Center for Animal Referral and Emergency Services in Langhorne, PA
Sir Scruffy and his family want to give a special "Thank You" to the staff of CARES and especially Dr. Jennifer Adler, MSc, VMD for the recent care and services needed by Sir Scruffy during the last few months and the health challenges suffered during that period. The personal concern and care Dr. Adler demonstrates is far beyond "just a job" for her. She listen patiently and hears all your comments to make sure she has a complete understanding on the symptoms described in order to determine the proper path forward. Dr. Adler and the staff of CARES define the word "care" and demonstrate the patience needed to comfort both the patient and importance of this family member. Because of Dr. Adler Sir Scruffy is doing well and is on a strong path for the future. THANK YOU...with sincere appreciation, Sir Scruffy and family.

Sunday January 12, 2014 - Tribute to Sir Scruffy's very dear friend Benny who will continue to bring smiles to everyone that was lucky enough to have him touch their lives. The note below is written by his most wonderful "human" parents that always considered themselves blessed to have Benny as part of their family:
Dear Family and Friends,
Our dear Benny left us on Sunday, November 24th. He was 17 -1/2 years young. Can't believe that 12 -1/2 years passed since we drove to APAW in Princeton Junction
to bring home our furry little guy, all covered with dust and dirt, and sporting an uneven ear cut, but with the most soulful eyes. Seems like yesterday. Benny was diagnosed with lung cancer back in April of this year, but apart from a cough, he was doing pretty well until this past Friday when the redness that suddenly appeared in his left eye turned out to be a severe infection lurking behind the scar tissue of a previous ulcer that had healed. Fortunately we were able to make him comfortable with eye drops for pain, and to hopefully clear up the infection. After a frantic two days bringing him back and forth to the emergency care hospital for rechecks, Sunday morning presented signs that his eye could rupture at any moment. We were told at our first emergency visit that due to Benny’s other health issues, surgery wasn't an option if his eye ruptured. In addition, other signs that he was failing made it clear that it was his time. Thankfully, our wonderful vet at VCA Animal Healing Center was able to meet us at her office Sunday morning, and we were able to let Benny go, peacefully and with dignity. We are thankful that last Monday, November 18th we were able to finish up work early, close down our home office; and seize the day to drive Benny to Tinicum Park, his favorite place. Attached are three photos of him, all happy moments at Tinicum, including his last trip on the 18th. As you know, he was much more than a pet to us. He was our little 'furkid.' Death can't take the love that is in our hearts for our dear little Benny. That love will remain there forever. He leaves us with many memories to counter our tears.
Love, Anita and Max

Sir Scruffy has a new pen pal named Cassidy. She is a native Hoosier who went to live with her new mom just before Christmas last year (2012). With only 3 legs, Cassidy gets around just fine and has settled into her new home. Here is a portion of her letter to Scruffy:
"I thought I would send a picture of me under the Christmas tree in my new bed as well as a few more to let you see that life with a Mom who loves you as much as
mine does is pretty sweet, indeed. But, Sir Scruffy, you already knew that! I have also included a couple of me playing with Mom and the rubber chicken Aunt Melanie
got me for Christmas. My ears fly when I do anything. Dumbo has nothing on me!
Love,
Cassidy"

In Memory of Sir Scruffy's Great Friend and Companion "Lady"
Dear
family and friends,
Lady passed away this morning, peacefully, at home.
She was a truly exceptional friend and companion to me. I will forever miss her
sweet and gentle spirit. Rest in peace my beautiful Ladybug. I will always love you.
Alicia
I LOVED YOU BEST
So this is where we part, my Friend,
and you¹ll run on, around the bend.
Gone from sight, but not from mind,
new pleasures there you¹ll surely find.
I will go on, I¹ll find the strength,
life measures quality, not length.
One long embrace before you leave,
share one last look, before I grieve.
There are others, that much is true,
but they be they, and they aren¹t you.
And I, fair, impartial, or so I thought, Will remember well
all you¹ve taught.
Your place I¹ll hold, you will be missed, the fur I
stroked, the nose I kissed.
And as you journey to your final rest,
take this with you, I loved you best.

In Memory of Sir Scruffy's most dear friend Miss Frisky:
Miss Frisky has touched so many lives bringing a unique and "one of a kind" personality to the relationship between a family pet and owner - she very quickly became a family member and never went back to being a pet! Sir Scruffy and Miss Frisky met in New Hope, PA and very quickly became a life long friendship that distance could not tame. After Miss Frisky moved back to Indiana the yearly visits back to Indiana became the highlight of the year for both Sir Scruffy and his parents. As much as Sir Scruffy looked forward to visiting Miss Frisky, his parents looked forward to the most wonderful vacation break you could imagine with Miss Frisky and her family - they are truely a wonderful addition to the world and a part of our lives that will last forever - Sir Scruffy's prayers and tears rest on his mind for his very, very special Miss Frisky - we will keep you in our hearts forever!
Sir Scruffy's new friends - just added to Scruffy's friends page...the world is becoming a better place - one pet at a time!
Special Note: On December 28, 2012 Sir Scurffy made his annual visit to the Bucks County ASPCA to deliver his yearly money find - see photo below - his total find during his walks throughout 2012 was $55.86!

4 Better Paws Narrative update (thanks to Jim of "4 Better Paws"):
Below are pics of our Papillon, Jax and his sweet Pitti Bull, girl friend Karma taken during their first and second swimming lesson together. Barb and Mary Anne adopted Karma several months ago and I have been working with them once a week on introducing Karma to new activities to help build her confidence. She loves the dog park and swimming now too. The pool is in their back yard and we all felt it would be dangerous for Karma unless she knew how to swim to the end to get out in case she fell in some how. Jax just went along for the fun.. ;)
The second session in the pool they got comfortable enough to dive right in. During one trial with Karma swimming, she started going to the side instead of towards the stairs. Jax got all excited, started barking at her and dove in beside her to keep her going straight - that's the pic of them swimming head to head. In another shot, Mary Anne is holding Jax after he swam to her and Karma is swimming towards her next.. It was really enjoyable to see these pups get over their reluctance and start to enjoy the water.

Jax lives on the West Coast of the USA with his adoptive parents Jim and Ilayna who are actively dedicated
to the welfare and care of animals in need. They are involved with local rescue efforts and Jim helps with the training and rehabilitation of rescued animals.
Note from Jax's adoptive parents:
"Hi, here's a couple pics of Jax at 6-Mths old watching the ducks in the pond behind the house.. He's learning not to chase the ducks but I do let him chase the big bullfrogs back into the water at night. (He catches some of them with his feet but just wants to play and doesn't bite them.)"
Check out the supplement below, whether for your horse or now available in a canine version - flavored for your horse or dog to love taking it! Scruffy came across this by accident meeting the family that developed the supplement to help aging horses stay healthy and strong while on one of his many walks - It became such a success they developed the formula for dogs too...www.EquineWellBeingPlus.com - Scruffy and his friends now enjoy flavor and nutrition at the same time!

Sir Scruffy's Biography:
Sir Scruffy joined our family when we adopted him from the Bucks County S.P.C.A. in 2003. Provided with a loving home and unconditional love, he adapted well to his new surroundings. We quickly learned the importance of frequent walks and playtime for this active little dog. He loves to play with balls and balloons, but most of all Scruffy loves to go for walks. We began making regular trips to a variety of parks and settled into routine walks in our neighborhood and surrounding towns, including New Hope, PA and Lambertville, NJ. Our lives were changed in ways we had not anticipated. We soon met and befriended people we would never have known. Often they were people who were walking their own dog or simply showed an interest in meeting ours. Scruffy made friends, too. Many of his friends are pictured on this site. While walking Sir Scruffy he often finds coins and bills. The money is cleaned and stored in his collection jar, then donated to his Alma Mater (the Bucks County S.P.C.A.) at the end of the year. Sir Scruffy can always put a smile on your face. Walking by or visiting in a local shop he is always greeted with a smile. Both young and old always comment on how striking and handsome he is as he walks down the street. For the Maximo family Sir Scruffy can make a challenging day seem like a walk in the park just by looking into his big brown eyes......that say "I'm ready to go for another walk".
Scruffy's website goals and mission:
Scruffy would like to bring a warm, calm feeling to the world around you. He knows how much your pets can help you feel good and the health benefits from your relationship and the bond that is established between each other. The world would be a better place if people took a good look at our pets and see how much love and compassion is shared with us each and every day.
When you leave the site Scruffy will be satisfied if you have a smile on your face and you feel good. You are welcome and encouraged to submit your experiences and stories to share with this website's readers.

Scruffy and his volunteer Nanny (Auntie Ruth)
When you find a friend with a good heart and a genuine love for animals it is easy to feel safe, comfortable and loved. Scruffy is fortunate to have found that person in Auntie Ruth. Ruth's caring ways can make any pet feel special!
Food for Thought:
Although our pet family members may only be here for a short time the changes they leave on our hearts and the memories they imprint in our minds last a lifetime.
